    LOW VITAMIN D SYMPTOMS

Although low vitamin D symptoms can be mild in the beginning, low levels of this vitamin cause severe health problems and lead to deficiency. This condition is serious and can be very difficult to treat. Deficiency can be mild and severe. In case of mild deficiency, the most common symptoms will include sleep disorders (insomnia is the most common one), diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss and impaired vision. None of the symptoms is severe at this stage, and most people just leave the symptoms untreated, which is actually very dangerous. It is important to recognize the symptoms and start treating them as soon as possible.

Severe Deficiency of Vitamin D: What Are the Common Symptoms?

    ● Pain in muscles

    ● Bone fractures

    ● Rickets (in children)

    ● Soft and fragile bones

    ● Chronic fatigue

    ● Impaired immunity

    ● Depression

    ● Osteomalacia (this condition is seen in adults; it is similar to rickets)

Low vitamin D in blood can lead to diseases like asthma, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), multiple sclerosis, some types of cancer (prostate cancer in males and breast cancer in female patients), glucose intolerance and cognitive impairment in senior patients.

People who experience persistent pain in bones and muscles (and can’t find any logical explanation), should visit their doctors and see if their vitamin D levels are low. Blood tests are used for measuring vitamin D levels, the entire procedure is safe and it does not take much time. If vitamin D levels are low, the patient will get vitamin D supplements to use (D3 supplements are more popular and most doctors will rather prescribe D3 than D2 supplements).

Vitamin D is produced in the skin during the sun exposure. Spending time in the sun at least three times a week will help your skin produce enough vitamin D; however, people who live in cold areas cannot get enough sunlight, and this is one of the major causes of deficiency.

Some foods contain this vitamin, but not in adequate amounts. For example, foods like fish oil, liver, egg yolk and dairy products contain vitamin D, but you won’t be able to get your daily dose from these foods. Consuming animal-derived products will certainly be helpful, but it won’t be enough.

Keep in mind that vitamin D deficiency shows no symptoms in the beginning. You can be deficient for months, without even knowing about it. Prevention is very important, so visit your doctor and have your D levels measured.

Normal levels of this vitamin have to be maintained; otherwise, a person can become deficient in vitamin D and vulnerable to infections, bone problems, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and even depression (this is seen in menopausal women who lack vitamin D). In children, vitamin D deficiency is the primary cause of rickets.
