Every day we are bombarded with advertisements for products that will make us healthy and help us live a long life. The fact is, you really don’t have to purchase any of these expensive so-called miracle products: you can change your lifestyle into a healthy one all on your own.

A healthy lifestyle begins with a few rules. These rules should be followed for optimum health. These lifestyle changes can make you feel better every day by making your body stronger, strengthening your immune system making it better equipped to fight off various viruses and illnesses while you live a longer life.

The Rules of a Healthy Lifestyle:

Healthy Lifestyle

No smoking

We all know that smoking cigarettes is bad fone. Smoking cigarettes puts you at risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, and death caused by some sort of lung cancer or disease.

Consume a healthy diet

Limit the amount of simple carbohydrates and sugary foods, and add more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Vegetables contain a plethora of vitamins and minerals and eating them on a regular basis can help prevent a variety of diseases. The vitamins in them can also help increase your metabolism while converting fats to energy. Green vegetables contain probiotics which work to strengthen your immune system and promote overall health. Take a good long look at your diet and analyze how many fatty and sugary foods you are eating and incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Not only will this help your immune system, it will also help you to maintain a healthy weight while working to fight off diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Exercise has a plethora of benefits apart from maintaining a healthy and fit body. Getting regular physical exercise helps to combat diseases and other health problems, while also improving your mood, increasing energy levels, and improving your sleep patterns. Getting regular exercise sends the proper amount of oxygen and nutrients to the brain right where you need it. Rule of thumb states that you should get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. You don’t have to go to the gym to exercise, there are simple workouts you can do at home or a brisk walk is a great way to improve your heart health.

Avoid alcohol

Well, you don’t have to avoid alcohol completely, but you should limit how much alcohol you drink each week. Most people know the psychological effects that alcohol has but not many people realize how many harmful physical effects drinking alcohol can have on the body. Drinking regularly increases your risk of developing arthritis, cancer, kidney failure, hepatitis, and cirrhosis of the liver. It also raises your blood pressure and glucose levels, while increasing your risk of developing malnutrition. Neuropathy and dementia are also more common in those who drink on a regular basis.

A healthy weight

Maintaining a healthy weight is another one that should go on this list, but typically if you follow a healthy diet and exercise every day, you will have no problem maintaining a healthy weight. Being overweight can cause tremendous stress on the heart while also making you more prone to develop diseases such as cancer, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, and experience sleep apnea. Implementing a healthy diet and a new exercise regime should help you to lose weight and become more healthy overall. Losing just five to ten percent of weight can significantly decrease your chance of developing any of the above diseases.

For the best health and longevity, you should try to stick to all 5 of these rules. Even breaking just one or two of these rules can increase the risk of shortening your life. You will be more susceptible to develop diseases that can end your life at an earlier age than if you had followed all of the guidelines.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center conducted research on women to determine whether a healthier lifestyle does indeed increase the length of life. It was found that women that followed most or all of these rules lived longer with a reduced risk of mortality and decreased chance of developing cancer or coronary artery disease. Women who followed all of these rules had a 43 percent lower chance of developing terminal diseases.

We are all aware of the negative effects from smoking and drinking however, in studies of women who did not smoke or drink, following the remaining rules still had an affect on their health and longevity. Luckily, the rules above can be achieved by simply making changes to your lifestyle habits. You have control over your diet and exercise. You have a choice to eat healthy or non healthy foods. You also have a choice to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Not only will you reap the multiple benefits from eating healthy and exercising, you will also feel better mentally and physically.

If you smoke or drink and need help quitting, get the help that you need. To stop smoking, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for help and advice. If you need help to stop drinking, look for local groups that can help with alcohol addiction.

Everyone should adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Not only will you gain physical benefits from following these guidelines but you will also experience the many psychological benefits from living a healthier lifestyle. You will feel better both mentally and physically which means that you will also enjoy the life that you are living and living it to the fullest. You are protecting your health and your future by living a healthy life and you may notice that you do not become ill as often as you did before you adapted to your new healthy lifestyle.
