Fitness Over 40

Everyone wants to have a healthy long life. In order to do so you have to be cautious, go for your routine checkups, and of course exercise. Many complications resulting in crippling illness can start with a lack of exercise. Fitness is something that many people engage in on a daily basis. A lot of individuals struggle with to keep up with their health by failing to keep a daily fitness regimen. The older that you get, the more likely you are to suffer from a lack of fitness. However the older you get, the more important it is. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle allows you to maintain a youthful appearance, and more importantly a healthy body. Although, fitness over 40 is a little bit different.

Growing old will hinder your metabolism in both men and women. An active lifestyle can combat this affect that aging has. The number one reason why an increase in age can bring an increase in weight is because of a decrease in metabolism. Because of this, one key category of exercise is important –  aerobics. Aerobics are the best way to produce cardiovascular benefits, while toning and strengthening your entire body.


When it comes to aerobics it is important to mix things up. You want to hit all areas of your body, but you do not want to over-do anything, or miss areas by focusing too much on one exercise. Switching up your aerobic exercise allows you to do this. There are many different activities that you can do. Generally this involves light intensity workouts that can be performed for an extended period of time without constantly depleting your oxygen resources. This keeps your blood pumping and your metabolism youthful. Here are just a few of aerobic exercises you can choose from.

  • Eliptical Training

  • Bicycling

  • Jogging

  • Swimming

  • Step Aerobics

  • Plyometrics

  • Rowwing

  • Walking

By mixing up these exercises, you can keep things fresh, and constantly stay ahead on your fitness.

After you have taken care of heating up, strength training is also an important factor. Strength training for fitness over 40 is not the same for, say, a college football athlete. You do not want to constantly be maxing out your muscles, risking injury or heart problems. Strength training over 40 involves less weight and more reps. This highlights another aerobic attribute to fitness over 40. More reps will not only strengthen your muscles but will also burn calories, tone muscles, and keep you lean.

If you are to push exceedingly high weights with your muscles you will have less longevity. Maxing out may make your muscles, “bigger” quicker, but at this point in life you have to have more balance. Creating strong, lean muscles are much better, even at younger ages for that matter. When you build strength at an older age you want to do it slower, and more methodically. This ensures that you do not injure yourself, and that you exercise your muscles properly.

The most important fitness aspect and the the one that I saved for last is flexibility. At any age it is very important to stretch before and after exercise. This keeps muscles warm, ready, and then in turn leaves your joints with less pain or discomfort. A proper approach to stretching is not always taken. Stretching appropriately involves a few things.

First you need to get warmed up. This involves just a few laps, or really any form of calisthenics. After you have about a 5 minute warm up you want to get a good stretch. Stretching should be targeted towards muscles you will be working out. However, it is not limited to that category. Stretching itself is a form of cleansing. By tugging on your muscles just a little bit you are burning energy and revamping cells to be rejuvenated. Once you have stretched you are ready for your workout, but you are not done. It is just as important to stretch post workout as it is pre workout. This lets your muscles be more relaxed, and ensures proper rebuilding after you break them down. Stretching is just as important as aerobics and strength training, so don’t forget about it.

>Fitness for anyone can be tough. Fitness over 40 can be even tougher. It is important that you maintain a flexibility no matter what exercises you chose to do.  Be sure to engage in a multitude of various aerobic exercises. This will keep things interesting and also help you out targeting every muscle in the body. When it comes to strength training remember that more reps goes a long way. Use less weight, and then you will mix toning with strength training giving your body a youthful lean look and feel. Exercising is very important to one’s health. Just because you are not overweight doesn’t mean you aren’t as healthy as you can be. Exercising can help your stress, weight, anxiety, job performance, heart, lungs, reduce acne, and even curve depression. Fitness over 40 may not be easy, but it will help you lead a long happy life!
