Food That Helps You Fight Disease

It seems that everyone is on a regimen of prescription drugs these days. It is easy to become sucked in to the logic that there is a magic pill to cure all diseases. However, there is a simpler, safer and more cost effective way to help the body fight diseases such as type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, and even cancer and heart disease. Foods are capable of more than curing hunger and cravings.

Food Fight Disease

Type 2 Diabetes

With over 25 million Americans estimated to have diabetes, it is clear why this epidemic is so distressing. While many individuals may feel helpless to stop the onset or progression of this deadly disease, there are numerous “super foods” that have been proven to do just that. To combat diabetes, it is crucial that individuals consume the proper balance of nutrients, such as vitamins A, C and E, calcium, magnesium, protein, and potassium, as well as fiber, which keeps blood sugar stable by decreasing hunger and cravings. Some of the foods that share these characteristics include egg Whites, fat-free milk and yogurt, whole grains, fish, tomatoes, berries, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, dark leafy green vegetables, and all varieties of nuts and beans.

Arthritis

The National Institutes of Health estimate that about one in five or 20% of people is affected by arthritis. Still, arthritis does not have to control the lives of its sufferers. Nutrition and lifestyle choices are huge contributors to arthritis and the degree of its symptoms. Regardless of the type of arthritis, the cause is the same; inflammation. Therefore the most effective prescription drugs used to control arthritis pain and joint stiffness are designed to fight inflammation. However, prescription drugs are not the only way to control inflammation. A diet that centers on foods with anti-inflammatory properties can significantly reduce inflammation, thus eliminating the problem altogether. The foods that provide the most benefits to arthritis include olive oil, ginger, turmeric, raspberries, onions, pumpkin, blueberries, kale, red and black grapes, spinach, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, sweet red pepper, broccoli, plums, eggplant, apricots, apples, fish, and lean beef.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis causes bones to become fragile and brittle. The only weapons strong enough to fight osteoporosis are the four nutrients that the body needs to build bones: vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and calcium. For this reason, many of the drugs used to treat the disease rely on ingredients found naturally in a variety of healthy foods. Some of the best sources of these nutrients are low or non-fat dairy, soybeans, almonds, broccoli, figs, okra, raisins, oranges, artichokes, tomatoes, spinach, beans, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, turnip greens, salmon, sardines, tofu, and beans.

Heart Disease

Fighting heart disease does not have to mean taking countless prescription statin medications. There are numerous healthy foods that have been scientifically proven to fight heart disease; all without the risky side effects or high prescription drug costs. Some of these foods include sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots, leafy green vegetables, onions, garlic, pumpkin, squash, nuts, whole grains, olive or canola oil, low sodium foods, salmon, oranges, apples, red or black grapes, grape juice, grapefruit, cantaloupe, honey, beans, and avocados.

Cancer

While no one food can completely prevent or cure cancer, a diet high in fiber and rich in fruits and vegetables that are loaded with phytochemicals can significantly decrease the risk. Research suggests that brightly colored fruits and vegetables may be one of the best tools for fighting off the free radicals that have been linked to cancer. A diet full of carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables, such as red and yellow bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, oranges, leafy green vegetables, like spinach, turnip greens or romaine lettuce may lower the risk of numerous types of cancer.

The pharmaceutical companies would like everyone to believe that their products are the only way to find relief from disease, but by simply incorporating healthier foods into your diet, you may be able to live a longer, happier life without buying hundreds or thousands of dollars’ worth of prescription drugs each year. In the end, it is better to eat healthy and prevent the majority of diseases than to spend countless hours in a doctor’s office every year. These foods can significantly decrease your chances of heart attack, stroke or cancer; three very serious diseases that are responsible for the premature deaths of thousands of people every year. Choosing the right foods may be the difference between life and death.
