People go on diet, exercise and go the gym regularly to lose weight. Yes, obesity and being overweight is a problem that most people have, and with these issues comes other complications such as hypertension, diabetes, bone issues and in some cases can lead to cancer. Others just want to be fit and energetic. But do you know that there are fats that can help you lose weight? Yes, there are essential fats that can do that and one of them is the essential fatty acid omega-3. “What? Why do I need to have another form of fat when I’m trying to minimize fats in my body?” you may ask. Omega-3 fatty acids are another tool in the weight loss arsenal that are proven to be effective.

What Is Omega-3 Fatty Acid?

This essential fat refers to a group of three fats namely ALA (alpha linolenic acid commonly sourced from plants and plant oils) EPA ((eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid both commonly found in marine products and marine oils). Primary sources of omega-3 DHA and EPA are fish oil, algal oil, krill oil and egg oil. ALA are from seeds and dew-berry oil, flaxseeds, flaxseed oil and hemp oil. These essential fats are important for metabolism and the enhancement of the brain and nervous system. It also helps in preventing inflammation and promote good blood circulation. These essential fats cannot be manufactured naturally by the human body thus it is taken from the foods that we eat or as supplements. Plus these essential fats do not contain cholesterol.

Is Fat Bad Or Not?

Every time you go shopping and if you’re trying to lose weight, any products with a low fat or no fat label are the one’s that you purposely pick. Some products that also have too much sugar in it to make for the loss in taste from having less fat. Avoiding fat totals may not be beneficial because you may be missing out on an essential nutrient in your body most especially when the huge calorie deficit happens. Fats could be your most powerful weapon in losing weight. Let’s find out. Fats are divided into two:

  • Saturated fat – usually fats from animals.
  • Unsaturated fat – fats sourced from vegetables, plants and some marine animals like fish, squid and krill. Under this there are still two sub-categories of unsaturated fat
  • Monsaturated fat
  • Polyunsaturated fat

According to the research made by Basic Nutrition and Diet Therapy, low levels of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids are linked to hair loss, impaired vision, an altered mental state, low blood platelets and growth retardation in children. These essential acids are also responsible for preventing or lowering the risks of cancer, stroke, cognitive dysfunction, immune dysfunction and some other mental disorders.

Eat Fat To Lose Fat

Studies have shown that you can eat fat and lose fat. If you’re in a caloric deficit (meaning that you’re eating less calories than what you actually burn), having the essential fatty acids in the body means that you will burn them as energy resulting in burning more body fat. A study stated that women who are on a low caloric diet, omega-3 fatty acids accelerated the removal and burning of adipose tissues. This also means that the beta oxidation process helps in breaking down the fatty acids to create body energy and enhance metabolism. It also lowers the glycemic load of every meal you’re taking.

Having a balanced omega-3 and omega-6 in your daily diet because it helps in weight loss and helps in enhancing other body functions. We don’t have to avoid fat totally for the reason stated above.Reasons why essential fatty acids are important:

Essential fatty acids behave like the hormones that increases the body’s capacity to burn fat and decrease fats that accumulates on the different body parts,

  • It suppresses the appetite
  • It lowers the risks of sugars spikes or sugar swing. It minimizes food craving fat accumulation and energy loss.
  • Lowers inflammation and water retention in tissues and promotes it removal that are unnecessarily accumulated in other body parts.
  • It increases brain stimulation and lowers the risk of depression and other mental issues.

As a conclusion, omega 3 fatty acids are not bad for your body. You need the right fat, a balanced diet with exercise will increase your chances of burning those accumulated bulges in your body. Take the first step and reach for your goal.
