Role of Coconut Oil In Reducing Scars

Reducing Scars

Till some time back, I had these horrifying acne scars on my face. It jolted my confidence as I felt embarrassed by them. Then somebody told me about coconut oil. Coconut oil is an exceptional healing agent with loads of useful health applications. Coconut oil has been in use since time immemorial. In tropical countries, it is even used as a staple diet. Coconut oil has a host of beneficial uses (well over 1000) ranging from medicinal to nutritional and from industrial to wellness.

Coconut oil has been proven to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and fever-reducing properties It helps in preventing skin infection whether bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic. It is most effective in psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis and acne. It also aids in reducing various types of scars that we encounter.

Scars are regions of fibrous tissue that replace normal skin after injury. Hence, scarring is a natural element of the healing process. Normal scars may appear as thin pale lines. Some appear as brown spots, some as raised (due to) overgrowth of tissues, still some others have sunken or pitted appearance (as in acne). Scars can be formed from a variety of reasons and they vary in appearance. Scars may be itchy and painful. Sometimes they appear dark, raised and are unsightly. People feel embarrassed (as I did) and are eager to get rid of them.

The different types of scars noticed are like scars formed from fresh cut stitches, burns, stretch marks (from pregnancy), acne marks, wound infection, adolescent growth spurts, chickenpox marks, surgery, accidents, or body piercing. The medical treatments available are: laser treatment, chemical peels, radiotherapy, dermabrasion, collagen induction therapy (CIT) and surgery. But these treatments are expensive and not everybody can afford them. The cheapest cure available in  reducing scars with us is coconut oil that we often ignore.

The ingredients that make coconut oil so exceptional:

The presence of vitamin E, and lauric, caprylic and capric acid in coconut oil makes it an excellent ointment to help fade scars. Vitamin E, an antioxidant present in it is acknowledged for accelerating the recovery of skin abrasions, burns and other trauma. Coconut oil also keeps new acne scars from forming. It deeply penetrates, moisturizes and acts as a defensive barrier against environmental and free radical damage.

Raw coconut oil that is organically prepared is by far the best solution for those plagued with acne or acne scars. One of the key ingredients of coconut oil is cholesterol.  It facilitates in treating acne scars by forming an invisible film around your skin as and when applied and helps.

It benefits other types of scars as well. People suffering from psoriasis and eczema should use it on a regular basis. The oil soothes their skin and help in lessening the scars. Pregnant women can use it to keep their skin nourished and post delivery to reduce the scars.

Vitamin E is an ingredient of coconut oil.  Rub the affected areas with coconut oil to help reduce the appearance of scarring from cuts, wounds, burns and stretch marks. On some people, Vitamin E proves to be harsh. They can combine it with some other components to get that soothing effect. A collective outcome of the natural oils and coconut products aids in fading the look of scars over a period of time.

The Right way to use coconut oil on the scars:

Heat the oil to liquefy it. Take the warm oil on your palm and massage the oil into the affected area you wish to see disappearing gently at least once a day. For better results apply it 2-4 times a day. Don’t wash the extra oil; let your skin absorb it naturally. Coconut oil has good penetration power. Follow the routine of twice a day. Let those embarrassing marks become a history.

Keep this in mind when treating your scars with natural remedies: Do not do it excessively as this may result in irritation and worsen your present condition. Remember coconut oil does not eliminate scars totally nor does any other products or home remedies. It can only reduce the visible appearance of the marks.

Massaging coconut oil into old scar tissue habitually can help lessen the appearance of the scar and bring your skin back to its glowing, youthful self. Don’t give up easily on the treatment. So be patient and keep a positive attitude.
